Car Park Closure

Work to begin on Mermaid Quay car park transformation

Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay’s premier dining and leisure destination, has announced that work is set to begin on the transformation of its car park.

After securing planning approval from Cardiff Council, the extension and improvements to the car park will create greater parking capacity for Cardiff Bay to help support the continued investment into the area.

The Mermaid Quay car park will stop operating on Sunday 2nd March with demolition beginning shortly after. Following a three month demolition phase, construction of the new multi-storey facility will take around nine months with the car park due to reopen in April 2026.

The new Mermaid Quay car park will include two new floors adding over 300 new spaces, these will include more accessible spaces on the ground floor, increased parent & child spaces, as well as new electric vehicle charging points. The new car park will also see the creation of a new layout and exits to help improve traffic flow and will also include a cycle hub to help encourage green travel.

To minimise the impact of the temporary closure of Mermaid Quay car park whilst the improvement works take place, the management team will be working with neighbouring car parks to help guide staff and shoppers to alternative parking options.

The investment into improving the Mermaid Quay car park follows the recent public realm refurbishment works which have taken place across Cardiff Bay to enhance the visitor experience.

Mark Nott, Centre Manager at Mermaid Quay said: “During the temporary closure of the Mermaid Quay car park we urge visitors to Mermaid Quay and wider Cardiff Bay attractions to check out alternative parking options before they travel. Our team will also be on hand to provide advice to those working and visiting the area on alternative ways to travel to the bay to help minimise disruption and ensure you continue to have an enjoyable experience whilst visiting Mermaid Quay.

“Upon its completion, the redeveloped Mermaid Quay car park will provide visitors to Cardiff Bay with a much improved car parking experience. It will also provide greater capacity to support the Council’s ambitious plans for further leisure facilities across the bay area, including the new indoor arena.”
