Ianto’s Shrine

Ianto Jones is a fictional character in the BBC Television series Torchwood (part of the Doctor Who franchise) which was filmed, in part, at Mermaid Quay. Ianto died in a confrontation with an alien species known as the 456 in the Torchwood mini-series Children of Earth which was first broadcast in the UK in July 2009. This is an impromptu memorial to the much-loved character.

In the series, this was the location of one of the entrances to Torchwood 3’s secret underground base – which was disguised as a Tourist Office. The other entrance was via an “invisible lift” by the water tower in Roald Dahl Plass. From this base a dedicated team of heroes – including Ianto Jones – worked tirelessly to protect the earth from alien threats that slipped through the rift in time & space that runs through Cardiff.

Within days of the much-loved character’s demise on the show, fans started to leave tributes to symbolise their love and devotion to Ianto. All these years later, fans from all over the world still visit the shrine and leave mementoes.
