Mermaid Quay has been recognised by Police Crime Prevention Initiatives, gaining a prestigious Risk Management Award 2019 from Secured Environments in association with Secured by Design. The award recognises the steps that Mermaid Quay’s management team has taken in adopting good security principles and successfully meeting Secured Environments standards.
The police-approved award acknowledges that the popular Cardiff Bay retail and leisure centre is following Secured Environments six key principles to achieve the highest levels of safety for staff and customers.
The six principles are a commitment to create a secure environment; an understanding of the security risks that the centre faces; the development of an effective response to reduce the risks; a management plan to achieve its aims and objectives; the effective implementation of the security and crime prevention measures; and the monitoring and evaluation of the security and crime prevention measures
In order to gain this award, Mermaid Quay had to demonstrate auditable competency in each of the six key principles as well as knowledge of all security procedures both hard and physical prevention, by everyone involved from the organisational and site management to the support services, including security and cleaning teams. The team had to have a detailed understanding and a commitment to the security and safety of Mermaid Quay and be able to demonstrate continual improvement, we achieved this by implementing scenario training for a variety of potential security threats and built in team meetings to identify and improve our processes and procedures. Our security objectives were brought in line and are continuously reviewed for improvement.
Commenting on the award, Mermaid Quay Centre Manager Justin Patel said: “We are delighted to have secured such important recognition of our efforts to ensure that Mermaid Quay is a safe and secure place for all to enjoy. As a major visitor attraction we pride ourselves on being somewhere that people can feel comfortable and safe at any time of day or night and have implemented the management systems necessary to ensure that this is the case.”
