Rainbow octopus invasion by Welsh Woolly Women

There’s been an invasion of rainbow octopuses (octos) at Mermaid Quay, yarn graffiti or street art created by Welsh Woolly Women.

The purpose of this yarn graffiti is to bring some beauty and wonder into everyday surroundings. This installation also prompts thought about environmental pollution, and aims to encourage discussion about apparent human emotions and activity within the animal kingdom.

Welsh Woolly Women is a collective of crafters based in and around Cardiff. A spokesperson for the group, a retired Company Director, said ‘we hope that we will make people of all ages stop and smile, talk about the thoughts and feelings raised by the installation, and perhaps think about being creative themselves.’

After being displayed at Mermaid Quay the octos will be moved to a permanent home in the garden of the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales at University Hospital of Wales.
