EMBLEMS OF WALES - MARGARET BERRY

The Dragon is coming out of his lair for “Emblems of Wales”, sponsored by Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas AM.

To complement Draig, the ten-foot flying dragon, Margaret Berry has created a set of six large sculptures drawn from Welsh history spanning the last 1500 years. The show “Emblems of Wales” has taken three years in the making as a consideration of “representing Wales and its People” to fit the Welsh Assembly’s Pierhead building.

Margaret specialises in suspended sculptures and her chosen medium is ceramic. The show lasts for four weeks (from 8 October - 7 November) in the Futures Gallery upstairs at the Pierhead with full disabled access.

Margaret’s private studio is in Dolgellau, Mid-Wales. She has been sponsored by Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM to display her work. Her dragon has been sleeping in a box since a show at Cywain in Y Bala in 2011 and will next see the light on October 8th. “Draig” should be in good company with, among others, an eight-foot sky diving Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, a life-size tight rope walking Hywel Dda and a pensive  armour-clad Owain Glyndwr considering stones gathered from all the counties of Wales’s varied and beautiful landscape.

25% OFF NEW AUTUMN MENU AT PIZZA EXPRESS

From 12 October to 9 November, Pizza Express in Mermaid Quay are celebrating the launch of their exciting new look restaurant by giving you the chance to enjoy their new autumn menu with 25% off your whole food bill.

Simply download and print out the attached leaflet, fill in your details and hand to your waiter when asking for your bill. Offer is available every day except Saturdays (terms & conditions apply).

The nautical new look at Pizza Express, Mermaid Quay was launched on 11 October. Situated in the heart of the Quayside, this popular restaurant has been totally transformed, taking its inspiration from the history of the area as a working port, exporting coal and iron.

Each Pizza Express restaurant is individually designed - often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The artwork at Mermaid Quay features nautical themed landscapes and landmarks including the Millennium Centre and the Pierhead. Subtle references to mermaids and sailing boats can be found in the fixed seating screen artwork.

Manager, Richard Walwin, said, "We have a friendly and enthusiastic team who are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful restaurant over a delicious pizza."

Pizza Express has been dishing up fresh, handmade pizza to Mermaid Quay since 2005. And on 7 October, PizzaExpress launched its new Autumn menu including three new pizzas and a mouth-watering calzone as well as two low-calorie Leggera dishes.  Along with new starters and four tempting desserts, the Autumn menu also sees the return of cheesy Dough Balls. New drinks are also joining the menu including Bollinger Champagne.

For younger pizza-lovers, Pizza Express' Piccolo menu is full of tasty choices including 'Create Your Own' pizza, and starts at just £3.50.  And for budding chefs looking to celebrate a birthday, a Pizza Making Party will see them transformed into pizzaiolos so they can stretch, toss and top their own pizza and play party games before sitting down to enjoy their culinary creations.

For more details visit www.pizzaexpress.com or telephone 02920 472006 to book your table.

DAFYDD RHYS SHORTLISTED FOR SALON STYLIST OF THE YEAR

Ken Picton Salon Director Dafydd Rhys (Current Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year and F.A.M.E. Team member) has been shortlisted for Salon Stylist of the Year in the British Hairdressing Business Awards.

The finalists have been announced after two days of judging by a prestigious panel of industry experts, manufacturers and business gurus. The awards seek to reward and recognise individuals and salons that excel in the business of professional hairdressing.

As well as being on the salon floor five days a week at the Ken Picton Salon (Cardiff) Dafydd also works backstage at many London Fashion Week shows, presents a regular style feature on S4C’s Prynhawn Da and counts celebs Alex Jones and Imogen Thomas among his loyal clientele.

Dafydd says of being shortlisted “I love where I am with my career at the moment and being shortlisted is a huge achievement. I have a great clientele at the salon, fantastic opportunities to be creative and travel outside the salon and also a great relationship with both the Welsh and British media to show what us hairdressers are made of. I’m very passionate about where I’m from and love taking back what I’ve learnt and achieved to share with the young aspiring stylists back home. It’s such a great industry, full of amazing people – I don’t want anybody to miss the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Dafydd Rhys is at Ken Picton Salon, 8 Mermaid Quay, Cardiff CF10 5BZ.  Tel: 029 2066 2080
